MTB Downhill Techniques Overview: The "Training Hub" Module

MTB downhill techniques overview - Training Hub - MTB Evolution

Welcome to the Speed Lab, your home for MTB downhill techniques.

This is your central resource for every downhill mountain bike skill. From basic body position to advanced jumps, this module sorts each skill by level, so you know what to work on to become a complete rider.

Why Do You Need MTB Downhill Techniques?

Mastering these skills is essential because mountain biking uses standardized technical elements that help riders judge the difficulty and character of a trail in advance. Without solid MTB downhill techniques, facing these features can be dangerous.

"Every “Trail Feature” has its purpose – from working on balance and speed control to tackling technical obstacles and jumps."

MTB Trail Features – MTB Elements Explained

1 The Foundations: Position and Control

This level lays the base for all the more advanced MTB downhill techniques. Without a perfect Attack Position, every further upgrade is biomechanically inefficient.

Technique Level Short Definition Goal
Attack Position 1 2 3 Neutral stance on the pedals, bent elbows and knees. Maximum impact absorption and readiness.
Brake Modulation 1 2 Applying the brakes progressively without locking the wheels. Maintaining traction and controlling speed.
One-Finger Braking 1 Braking with the index finger only. More control over the handlebars.
Vision & Scanning 1 2 Looking 5-10m ahead of the front wheel. Processing information in time.

2 Managing Forces and Corners (Cornering)

Corners are where races are won or lost. A good MTB cornering technique starts with Bike-Body Separation, one of the key skills in this hub.

Technique Level Short Definition Goal
Flat Corners 2 Turning on a flat surface with no banking. Weight on the outside pedal for grip.
Berm Riding 2 Riding through banked corners (berms). Using centrifugal force to carry speed.
Switchbacks 2 3 Sharp 180-degree "hairpin" turns. Precise hip rotation and control.
Counter-steering 3 Pushing on the inside of the handlebar. Faster lean of the bike into the corner.

3 Vertical Mobility and Obstacles

Moving through the 3D space of the trail while minimizing the impact of holes, roots and rocks. The bunny hop technique is the centerpiece of this level.

Technique Level Short Definition Goal
Front Wheel Lift 1 2 Lifting the front wheel (weight shifted back). Rolling over small obstacles.
Manual 2 3 Riding on the rear wheel (balancing with the hips). Maintaining speed over rough sections.
Bunny Hop 2 3 Lifting both wheels in sequence. Clearing obstacles at speed.
Pump Technique 2 Pushing into the dips, unweighting at the top. Free speed without pedaling.

4 Jumps and Drops (Airtime)

Technique Level Short Definition Goal
Drop-off 2 3 Riding off vertical drops. Avoiding OTB (going over the bars).
Jumping (Preload) 2 3 Compressing the suspension before takeoff. Controlled flight and a predictable trajectory.
Scrubbing 3 Laying the bike sideways at takeoff. Lower flight height (faster landing).
