Overview

Symptoms of a worn chain or cassette

If you recognize any of these signs, your chain is probably stretched and your cassette is wearing faster than it should.

01

Hard or inconsistent shifting

02

Chain skipping under load

03

Rubbing or squeaking while riding

04

Visibly elongated chain

05

Cassette teeth look pointed and worn

06

Faster drivetrain wear in mud, rain and dust

Bike service process: call and book by phone, Viber, WhatsApp or form

01

Book a slot

Get in touch by phone, Viber, WhatsApp or the booking form and describe the symptoms: is the chain skipping, is shifting delayed, or do you hear rubbing? If you know roughly how many kilometers you've ridden since the last replacement, the assessment is quicker.

Bike drop-off for service with a condition report

02

Bike check-in

You bring the bike to the workshop at Riste Anđića 20. Together we go through the reported problem and note the condition of the drivetrain before anything is touched.

03

Chain wear measurement

The mechanic measures the chain with a chain wear checker and inspects the cassette and chainring teeth. A chain with 0.75% wear or more should be replaced. You get a price estimate, and work starts only after you confirm it. Read more about replacement intervals in the guide to drivetrain component wear.

Why replace the chain on time?

A stretched chain rapidly wears the cassette and chainrings. If you replace the chain on time, the cassette can often outlast several chains, so cassette replacement is postponed or avoided.

Sourcing specific parts for bike service

04

Sourcing the chain and cassette

We choose the chain and cassette based on the number of speeds and compatibility with your drivetrain. We work with Shimano, SRAM and KMC. If a part isn't in stock, we order it and give you an estimated delivery time.

Shimano, SRAM, KMC

In stock or on order

We usually keep standard chains in the workshop. Cassettes for specific models are ordered, so the turnaround extends by the delivery time.

05

Replacement and adjustment

We replace the chain and, if needed, the cassette, then clean and lubricate the drivetrain and adjust the shifting for precise gear changes (derailleur adjustment). On Bosch and Shimano e-bikes we also run diagnostics, while Yamaha and other brands get mechanical service only, without diagnostics.

Final check and pickup of the serviced bike

06

Check and pickup

Before handover we check shifting through all gears and how the chain behaves under load. You pick up the bike with an explanation of what was done and maintenance advice, including chain lubrication.

Intervals

When to replace the chain and cassette?

Approximate intervals depend on the type of bike, the terrain and the conditions you ride in. The actual condition of the chain is determined by a chain wear checker.

2,500–4,000 km

MTB bikes

Recommended chain and cassette replacement interval for MTB. In mud, rain and dust the drivetrain wears faster, so we replace parts earlier.

3,000–5,000 km

Road bikes

Recommended interval for road bikes. Regardless of mileage, we replace the chain when the checker shows 0.75% wear or more.

Labor prices: chain replacement 10 KM, cassette replacement from 10 to 20 KM. Parts (chain, cassette) are paid separately. You get an exact estimate before work starts, and work doesn't begin without your confirmation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace my bike chain?

The recommended interval is every 2,500–4,000 km for MTB and 3,000–5,000 km for road bikes. We replace the chain earlier if you ride in mud, rain or dust.

How do I know if my chain is worn?

We measure chain wear with a dedicated chain wear checker. When it shows 0.75% or more, the chain should be replaced. External signs are skipping under load, inconsistent shifting and rubbing while riding.

Do I have to replace the cassette when I replace the chain?

Not always. If you replace the chain on time, the cassette can outlast several chains. If the cassette teeth are already pointed and worn, the cassette is replaced too.

What happens if I ride with a worn chain?

The cassette and chainrings wear out faster, and shifting becomes imprecise. Replacing the chain on time avoids an expensive replacement of the cassette and chainrings.

Which chains and cassettes do you install?

We work with Shimano, SRAM and KMC. The choice depends on the number of speeds and compatibility with your drivetrain.

How much does chain and cassette service cost?

Labor costs 10 KM for chain replacement and 10 to 20 KM for cassette replacement, while parts (chain, cassette) are paid separately. You get an exact estimate before work starts, and work doesn't begin without your confirmation.

Ready for precise shifting?

Don't wait for the chain to skip under load or for the cassette to lose its teeth completely. Book a slot and leave your chain and cassette service in Istočno Sarajevo to us. The workshop is run by Marko Ristivojević, Bosch eBike Expert and Master Bike Mechanic.
