The Olympic mountain trails above Sarajevo start where no other capital's do: you leave the city asphalt and, in under an hour, you are in untouched wilderness. This is not just a catchy phrase – it is a network of hundreds of kilometres of tracks that link the history of the 1984 Winter Olympics with modern MTB adventures.
Whether you are after technical single-trail sections on Trebević, epic climbs on Bjelašnica, the dense forests of Igman or the panoramic ridges of Jahorina, this region has it all. MTB Evolution guides you through the four guardians of Sarajevo. Get your bike ready, check its technical condition and start exploring. Out here, mountain biking in Sarajevo begins where the asphalt ends.
Four Giants: Choose Your Olympic Mountain Trails
Each mountain has its own character and demands a different approach. Check the sections below to see what awaits you on each one:
🌲 Trebević: The Lungs of the City
Type: Downhill / Enduro / XC
The mountain closest to the city centre, and you can even get up there by cable car. Known for the old bobsled track and new, thrilling DH lines through dense forest.
- ✅ Trail: Trebević DH Trail
- ✅ Attraction: '84 Bobsled Track
🏔️ Bjelašnica: Raw Beauty
Type: High Alpine / Marathon
The highest and the wildest. Here you ride above the clouds. Rocky terrain, strong winds and epic climbs toward the Observatory summit (2067 m a.s.l.).
- ✅ Trail: Bjelašnica Loop
- ✅ Village: Lukomir (the highest village)
⛷️ Jahorina: The Olympic Queen
Type: XC / E-Bike / Touring
A blend of modern tourism and wilderness. Bare ridges ("Gola Jahorina") offer views for kilometres around. Perfect for long E-Bike tours.
- ✅ Trail: Ridge tour
- ✅ Terrain: Grassy carpets and gravel roads
❄️ Igman: The Fresh-Air Spa
Type: XC / Gravel / Family
A mountain with a remarkable microclimate and ozone-rich air. Veliko Polje and Malo Polje are linked by dense forest roads, ideal for a cool summer ride.
- ✅ Trail: The wartime road (Igman–Bjelašnica)
- ✅ Culture: Olympic ski jumps
History Under Your Wheels: The Spirit of '84
It is no coincidence that this tour is called the Olympic mountain trails. As you pedal up toward the summit of Bjelašnica or race down Trebević, you pass venues that were the centre of the world in 1984. This is not only sport, it is a ride through a living museum.
The bobsled track on Trebević, today covered in graffiti and surrounded by forest, has become one of the most photographed attractions in the region and a favourite section for brave downhillers. On Igman, the winners' podiums stand as silent monuments in the forest, while the ski slopes of Jahorina make perfect summer playgrounds for long XC and E-Bike adventures. Protecting this nature is our priority. You can read more about the historical significance of these locations on the website of the Sarajevo Tourist Board.
⛑️ Mountain Safety: GSS and Etiquette
The Sarajevo mountains are beautiful, but they can be harsh. To keep your ride on the Olympic mountain trails a happy memory, follow these rules:
- Mountain Rescue Service (GSS): GSS teams cover all four mountains. In an emergency, call 121 or 112. We recommend not riding alone in remote areas.
- Stay on the Trail: Although most of the terrain is safe, Bosnia and Herzegovina is still dealing with leftover landmines from the past. Never leave marked roads, well-worn trails and meadows that are not clearly signed as safe, especially in the outlying, rarely visited parts of Trebević and Jahorina. Our routes on this website are 100% verified.
- Share Your Location: Mobile signal is generally good, but there are "dead pockets" (e.g. the Rakitnica canyon). Tell someone your route before you set off.
🗺️ Preparing for a Mountain Ride
The weather at 2000 metres above sea level changes in an instant. A sunny day in Baščaršija can mean fog and wind on top of Bjelašnica.
- Weather: Before you head out on the Olympic mountain trails, always check a detailed forecast on services such as Yr.no. Always carry a shell windbreaker.
- Navigation: Fog on Bjelašnica can get thick. A GPS device with preloaded routes is a must-have piece of kit.
- Service: Descents are long and hard on brakes. Book a slot to have your bike checked before you leave.
