About the project
Evolution Workshop is the MTB Evolution club's free collection of bike repair tutorials. In one place you'll find detailed articles, photos and short video tutorials on how to fix minor faults yourself, maintain your bike and recognize when it's time for a professional bike service.
The guides are written by Marko Ristivojević, founder of the MTB Evolution club and a Master Bike Mechanic who services bikes every day. We've been building trails and servicing bikes since 2015. Start with the basics, such as changing a tire, replacing a chain and adjusting brakes, then move on to tubeless, suspension and e-bikes. If you don't know where the fault is, try the fault diagnosis tool.
Guide author: Marko Ristivojević, Master Bike Mechanic, Bosch eBike Expert and Trailforks administrator for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Self-reliance on the trail: you can fix the most common faults even when there's no bike shop nearby.
Savings: minor repairs and regular maintenance don't have to go to a workshop.
Better knowledge of your bike: you understand what each component does.
Community: we share our knowledge for free with everyone who rides.
Beginners who want to learn the basics of maintenance.
Recreational riders who want their bike to always work properly.
MTB riders who set up their own suspension, brakes and drivetrain.
Parents who look after the whole family's bikes.
Learning order
Evolution Workshop has more than forty guides, so it's easy to get lost. If you're a beginner, follow these four steps. Each step builds on the previous one, and in the end you'll be able to maintain your bike yourself and recognize a fault that needs a professional service.
Start with the pre-ride bike check. Then learn how to change a tire and what to do when the chain breaks. These are the faults that most often stop you on the trail.
Once you've mastered the basics, move on to brake adjustment and the causes of squeaky brakes. For the derailleur, see the page on derailleur adjustment.
For more advanced riders there are the tubeless system, MTB suspension and the suspension calculator for your initial setup.
Regular maintenance protects your drivetrain and components: see the maintenance schedule and the guide to component wear. E-bike owners should start with battery and motor diagnostics and maintenance.
