First Ride Review: What Does Bosch Performance 2.0 Bring?
Is more always better with the Bosch Performance 2.0 update? Bosch clearly says no. While the rest of the eMTB industry keeps escalating the arms race, chasing ever bigger peak power figures, the German giant deliberately skipped raising Peak Power. Instead, Bosch delivers a dramatic jump in torque and support, adds a 12A fast charger and introduces brand-new software features for better control on the trail.
Bosch Performance 2.0 at a glance:
- More torque: Up from 100 Nm to 120 Nm, with support of up to 600% (CX Gen5 only).
- Drivetrain Tensioner: Drivetrain preload removes chain slack and makes the motor response instant.
- Hardware and software: A new 12A fast charger, fully adjustable Extended Boost and the fun Trick Check.
- CUBE test: We tested the update on our Cube Stereo Hybrid ONE44 (EVO Beast), and the results on the trail are impressive.
Bosch strikes again. After some competitors raised the bar by pushing specs through the roof, the German manufacturer delivers its answer to the current eBike arms race. Unlike the competition, Bosch sticks with a maximum peak power of 750 W.
That fits perfectly with their philosophy of self-regulation within the industry. Instead of pumping up raw power that only drains the battery and snaps chains, Bosch focused Bosch Performance 2.0 on smarter power delivery. Torque and support are increased, but in a targeted, situation-aware way.
At the heart of this eMTB motor update are the current fifth-generation motors: Performance Line CX and CX-R. They gain new features such as a fully adjustable Extended Boost (extended motor push), the Drivetrain Tensioner for more direct power transfer, and the recently announced Trick Check. On top of all that, the new 12A charger delivers a long-awaited hardware upgrade for extremely short charging breaks.
Drivetrain Tensioner: A Direct Link Between Pedal and Wheel
With the new Drivetrain Tensioner system in Bosch Performance 2.0, Bosch fine-tunes the interaction between the motor, the freehub and the rear wheel. By optimizing motor control, the annoying chain slack when using eMTB+ and Race modes is drastically reduced.
According to Bosch, the main goal is to protect the rear ratchet mechanism, which reduces wear and long-term repair costs. The system constantly keeps the drivetrain under a light preload, holding the top part of the chain tight. As a fantastic side effect, this dramatically cuts the short delay between pushing the pedal and the rear wheel reacting. The bike responds much more directly, which is crucial on technical climbs, tight switchbacks and steep steps.
Adjustable Extended Boost: More Control Over Obstacles
Extended Boost (a function that keeps pushing the bike forward for a moment after you stop pedaling) is nothing new, but Bosch Performance 2.0 lets you adjust it precisely. The length of this push can now be fine-tuned in several levels for each riding mode through the Flow app.
This matters a lot on technical climbs where obstacles like steps, dense roots or rocks don't allow a full pedal revolution. Depending on the riding mode you choose and your app settings, Extended Boost can now make clearing them easier without the fear of a pedal strike.

New 12A Fast Charger: More Riding, Less Waiting
Exciting news is that Bosch is also speeding things up on the hardware side. The new 12 Amp charger, with about 500 W of power, charges the battery roughly three times faster than before. The new PowerTube 800Wh battery should reach 50% charge in just one hour, which is an ideal solution for bikepackers or breaks at the Bike Park.
The only downside? This Bosch 12A fast charger will only reach the market at the end of 2026, and it is significantly heavier than a standard charger because of its complex cooling system. Whichever charger you use, good e-bike battery maintenance keeps your range up for longer.
Trick Check: Pure Fun or a Useful Tool?
With the Trick Check function, Bosch Performance 2.0 brings a playground into the system. The software automatically detects jumps, riding on the rear wheel (wheelie/manual) and lifting the rear wheel (stoppie). The system delivers live data on Air Time, height, distance covered and angle.

Important: Who Can Install Update 2.0?
One thing to note: the full feature package of Bosch Performance 2.0 (including 120 Nm of torque and support of up to 600%) is reserved exclusively for the latest Gen5 Performance Line CX and CX-R motors. Older systems, like the popular CX Gen4 (BES3), will receive selected features (Trick Check and adjustable Extended Boost) but stay at their proven 85 Nm of torque. If you'd rather leave it to a pro, our Bosch eBike service can run the update with proper diagnostics.
A bonus for the pros: the system now has a Live Data Interface, which means it is finally open to Garmin Edge computers. Speed, cadence, rider power and battery level are now mirrored directly on your Garmin screen.
On the Trail: How Does the CUBE Handle 120 Nm?
To check the theory in practice, we tested the Bosch Performance 2.0 update on our CUBE Stereo Hybrid ONE44 HPC RACE 800, which we beefed up in our workshop with a special EVO Beast upgrade (a custom tubeless setup and sintered brake pads).
On the trail, 120 Nm of torque feels far less brutal than the numbers would suggest, and that is intentional. Bosch manages this extra torque purely on demand. In normal riding the motor stays tame and composed, and it only releases the additional 120 Nm when it is truly necessary.
You'll notice it most in extreme situations: at very low cadence, when you almost stall the motor while grinding the pedals up the incredibly steep and technical sections of Romanija. The increased maximum support (up to 600%), on the other hand, is much more noticeable. It gets you to the 25 km/h limit faster and gives stronger assistance on steady, long climbs.
Trail Verdict and a Battery Warning
Our measurements show that with 120 Nm of motor torque on a steep climb with steps, you need about 15% less of your own power while riding 16% faster than on the old software.
However, the laws of physics can't be fooled. If you constantly climb using the maximum 120 Nm and 600% support, you'll pay for it with reduced range. Luckily, you decide when to release that power.
The Bosch Performance 2.0 software isn't here to redefine the game with raw power. Instead of pushing maximum watts through the roof, Bosch has put its effort into control, traction and mechanical durability. Who Is Bosch Performance 2.0 Right For?
After the test, it is clear who benefits most from Bosch Performance 2.0. If you ride steep, technical climbs, the noticeable difference comes from the higher torque and quicker response. For recreational riders who mostly stay on flat ground, the difference is less obvious.
- Technical climbs: higher torque and Extended Boost give better control over obstacles.
- Long rides: watch your battery consumption, because stronger support uses more energy.
- Riders who wear out drivetrains often: Drivetrain Tensioner reduces chain slack and makes the response more direct.
What to Check Before Updating
- Check that your drive unit is supported.
- Charge the battery and run the update through the app or at a workshop.
- After the update, check your tire pressure and the condition of your drivetrain, because a stronger motor wears the chain and cassette faster.
