Sokolac MTB Marathon: An Epic 50 km on Romanija

This weekend, on 13 June from 10:00, the Sokolac MTB marathon brings the Balkan mountain biking community together once again. The legendary “Romanija Zove 6”, organized by the tireless crew from Romanija Cycling, is ready to test your legs, your endurance and your technique on the beautiful slopes of Romanija.

The ride at a glance:

  • Date and start: Saturday, 13 June at 10:00 in Sokolac.
  • Course: 50 kilometers of mixed terrain (asphalt, gravel, forest roads).
  • Difficulty: The first 20 km bring a strong climb with over 500 meters of elevation gain, while the second part is much easier and faster.
  • Support: Two feed zones (km 12 and km 25) and a shared lunch after the race.

The Course: Suffering Early, Flow to the Finish

This year the organizers have prepared a 50 km route designed to make you sweat first and then reward you with fast kilometers. The course is described as hard, but incredibly fun, and it is a classic MTB cocktail: quick asphalt sections that turn into “biting” gravel, before pulling you into the deep, fresh forest roads of Romanija.

The key moment of this 50 km MTB marathon hides in the first half. In the first 20 kilometers you will climb over 500 meters. This is the toughest part of the ride. If you pace yourself wisely on this big climb and save some energy (or battery, if you ride an e-bike), the remaining 30 kilometers will be pure enjoyment on much easier, flowing terrain.

“There is no easy climb up Romanija, but that feeling when you crack the first 500-meter barrier and smell the pine on the gravel – that is why we come back every year.”

Logistics: Refreshments, Course Markings and a Well-Earned Lunch

The Romanija Cycling crew has made sure the logistics are top-notch, so all you have to think about is turning the pedals.

On the course you will find two official feed zones, strategically placed:

  • First feed zone (km 12): Located in the middle of the toughest climb, ideal for topping up water and fast sugars when your heart rate is deep in the red zone.
  • Second feed zone (km 25): Your reward for surviving the hardest part of the course, a perfect place to reset your energy for the fast second half of the marathon.

Getting lost is not an option. The whole route is marked densely and frequently with recognizable red-and-white tape, while clear orange signs will point you the right way at key junctions. Just follow the orange and push hard!

Is Your Bike Ready?

For a 50-kilometer event with dust, asphalt and forest mud, a reliable bike is everything. You only have a few days left until the start!

If you are not sure about your brakes after the winter break, or your drivetrain “skips” under load, be sure to stop by our Small Workshop. A quick bike service before the start will save you the frustration of pushing your bike up the mountain. Report your issue through the booking form and arrive at the 13 June start with a 100% working machine.

Once you cross the finish line, a traditional, hearty lunch for all participants will heal every aching muscle, along with plenty of stories about crashes and the best moments on the trail.

Romanija is calling. See you at the start of the Sokolac MTB marathon at 10:00!
