Lukomir Bjelašnica

A Lukomir e- ride takes you where most visitors never get to. Lukomir on Bjelašnica has long been known as the most authentic mountain village in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the real adventure starts beyond Lukomir. That is exactly where we headed on our 54.6 km e- loop, exploring the untouched expanses of high Bjelašnica, the Rakitnica canyon and wonderful villages that seem trapped in the past.

The ride at a glance:

  • A 54.6 km e-MTB loop with 1,368 m of climbing, starting and finishing at Edelweiss Mountain Lodge in Milišići.
  • Gravel makes up 93% of the route, and our average moving speed was 16.3 km/h.
  • There are three drinking fountains on the way to Čuhovići, but almost no shade.
  • The best view is at Blaca, across the Rakitnica canyon toward Visočica.

Lukomir e-MTB Ride: Starting from Milišići

We set off in front of Edelweiss Mountain Lodge on Bjelašnica, in the village of Milišići. A short stretch of asphalt leads into the real gravel story – a rolling road that never stops changing rhythm. Climbs and descents follow one another across bare, endless pastures, without a hint of shade but with breathtaking views. Out here nature is in charge: stone, grass and wind dominate.

Gravel makes up as much as 93% of the route (over 50 km), with only a small part on asphalt. With an average moving speed of 16.3 km/h the ride flowed nicely, but constant changes of gradient and temperatures of up to 32 °C made it properly demanding. If you want to see how the other classic loops on the mountain compare, have a look at the two Bjelašnica MTB routes.

Water Is Gold: Three Fountains Before Čuhovići

On this part of the route there are three fountains with drinking water, which is invaluable because the sun is relentless and there is no shade. According to Garmin, sweat loss was estimated at over 3.3 litres, so it is important to drink regularly and take short breaks. The most beautiful part of the Lukomir e-MTB ride begins after you conquer the plateau and drop toward the village of Čuhovići – a place where time seems to have stopped long ago. Stone houses, old granaries and an atmosphere reminiscent of the 19th century give this ride a special flavour.

Blaca and the View Across the Rakitnica Canyon

We continue toward Blaca, where an unreal view awaits from the edge of Bjelašnica – through the Rakitnica canyon toward the majestic Visočica mountain. Although this section is not technically demanding, it leaves the strongest visual impression. Peace, space and a sense of openness that inspires every nature lover.

For me, the Lukomir e-MTB ride is at its best right here. After Blaca, we descend across meadows and forest sections toward the valley, entering the Konjic zone.

A Break at Hotel Han and the Ride Back

The real reward comes in the form of rest and refreshment – Bosnian coffee and a beer on the terrace of Han hotel. This is the turning point – refreshed and happy, we head back toward Edelweiss Mountain Lodge, closing the full circle.
